On January 23rd, Chen Bangxun, Director of the Development Planning Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, stated at a press conference of the State Council Information Office that China's agricultural products have entered and exited, and the import volume of agricultural products ranks first in the world, becoming a major market for agricultural products in the world; The export value of agricultural products ranks fifth in the world, and high-quality agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables, and aquatic products have set sail and entered the international market. In 2023, China's agricultural product exports reached 98.93 billion US dollars, an increase of 0.9% compared to the previous year.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China imported 160 million tons of grain in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 11.7%. From a structural perspective, soybeans still account for the majority, with an annual import volume of 99.41 million tons, an increase of 11.4% compared to the previous year, accounting for more than 60% of all grain imports.
"Importing so many soybeans not only meets the demand for edible vegetable oil consumption, but also meets the demand for soybean meal for livestock and poultry breeding." Chen Bangxun said that China is a populous country and also a major consumer of food. The implementation of the national food security strategy is "focusing on ourselves, based on domestic production, ensuring production capacity, moderate imports, and technological support". Utilizing international grain sources to appropriately compensate for the production and demand gap of scarce varieties, improving the variety structure, has played an important role in ensuring food supply and stable prices.
